Note: Fortified port located on the Mars Diep, outlet from Wadden Zee into North Sea. Noted for battle where Dutch under De Ruyter and Tomp defeated English and French fleets in 1673. British and Russian troops landed here 1799. Fortified by Napoleon in 1811, it was the most powerful fortress in Europe. Little of the old town survived WW II. |
