Note: Industrial center located NW of the capital Yerevan, near the border with Turkey. The city is believed to have been founded by Greeks in 401 BCE, but its existence has not been continuous. It is Armenia's second largest city and its main textile center. Other products Gyumri produces include bicycles, scientific instruments & machines. It is also the site of an institute for training teachers. In 1988, like much of northwestern Armenia, the city was severely damaged by an earthquake. |
