Note: Located in the Alban Hills, southeast of Rome. In ancient times it was included in the territory of Aricia (modern Ariccia). It was in a holy area, together with a temple and grove that were sacred to the goddess Diana. The temple was small, but it was the richest in Latium; the remains of the temple precinct are located northeast of the lake. Two Roman galley ships, which were pleasure ships of the period of the emperor Caligula, rested on the lake bottom and were raised in the 1920s; many objects found on the ships were taken to museums in Rome, but the ships were burned by the retreating German army in 1944. The lake was a subject popular to painters of the Classical revival styles and Romantic landscapes.
