Note: This is a federally-recognized reservation stewarded by the Concow-Maidu of Mooretown Rancheria, a federally-recognized tribal entity of the same name. The reservation is located in Butte County, California. Though the Northwestern Maidu, from whom the Concow-Maidu descend, occupied land on the Mooretown Ridge, between the Middle Fork and South Fork of the Feather River, since 1500 B.C., the Concow-Maidu did not receive a federal reservation until June 1894. At this time, James T. Grubbs relinquished 80 acres of his personal land holdings for the Concow-Maidu people, pursuant to the Rancheria Act of 1884. A subsequent land purchase by the Bureau of Indian Affairs further expanded the Rancheria's boundaries in 1915. In accordance with the California Rancheria Termination Act of 1958, the original Rancheria was terminated in August 1961. However, pursuant to the Tillie Hardwick Case in 1983, the Mooretown Rancheria was reestablished. The Tribe purchased additional reservation lands in 1990 and 1992, bringing the reservation to its current acreage. |
