Note: This is a federally-recognized reservation stewarded by the Berry Creek Rancheria of Maidu Indians of California, a federally-recognized Nation of the same name. The reservation spans 65 acres of land within the boundaries of Berry Creek Canyon at the base of the Sierra Nevada Range in Butte County, California. It was first established on March 1, 1916 when the U.S. government purchased 32 acres from the Central Pacific Railway Company for the Nation. The reservation was expanded in 1987 when the Nation purchased a separate parcel of 33 acres, which was granted trust status pursuant to the Indian Land Consolidation Act of 1983. In an effort to uplist of the epistemic authority of Indigenous knowledge systems and engage with Indigenous peoples' Right of Reply, ethical collaboration with the tribal chairperson's office and/or cultural center is highly encouraged for the most authoritative information about tribal reservations. |
