Note: Large Incan city, debated to be the "Lost City" of the Incas, the site of a rebellion against the Spanish in 1572. First brought to Western attention by Yale professor Hiram Bingham in the early 20th century during his excavations of Machu Piccu. Bingham first believed Machu Piccu was "Vilcabamba," or the "Lost City," however, some evidence has later pointed to Espíritu Pampa as being the "Lost City." This is still debated. The site was extensively excavated in 1964 by Gene Savoy.
