Note: The city of Cottbus is located on the Spree River, at the edge of the Spree Forest in eastern Germany near the Polish border. It was a fortified trading town by the 12th century and ruled by Brandenburg from 1445, by Saxony from 1635, and by Prussia from 1815. Its surviving historic structures include some of the old fortifications and several 14th- and 15th-century churches. An industrial center, it produces electrical equipment, textiles, building materials, and leather. Its 2004 estimated population was 102,400.
