Note: Area of ancient civilization comprising the Peruvian coastal valley and elevated arid tablelands, which contain more than 70 ancient geoglyphs extending over nearly 190 square miles (500 square km). They were constructed more than 2,000 years ago by the people of the Nazca culture (flourished 2nd century BCE-7th century CE). The geoglyphs depict gigantic plants, animals, and humans, so large that they are best seen from a height. The Nazca culture was superseded by Huari and then Inca. |
