Sweet Track, The (prehistoric site) |
Note: The Sweet Track was a prehistoric causeway, comprising a raised platform dating from ca. 3806 BCE. Crossed wooden poles were driven into the marshy soil to allow passage. The causeway extended for 6,600 feet across the marsh between what was then an island at Westhay, now drained, and a ridge of high ground at Shapwick. It is currently preserved by the National Heritage Monument Fund. |
