Note: Ancient site situated on a high tufa plateau. The ancient town developed as an Etruscan settlement (one of the 12-city Etruscan league); documented by ancient writers. It flourished as a metalworking center in the 9th and 8th centuries BCE; the 6th century saw heavy production of Etrusco-Corinthian and Black-figure pottery. Attic Greek pottery was imported to Vulci on a scale and of a quality unparalleled elsewhere in Etruria; thousands of examples have been uncovered in tombs. Some of the earliest Etruscan stone sculpture comes from here. Vulci was subdued by Rome in 280 BCE; it declined in the 8th century CE when the bishopric of the area was transferred to Montalto di Castro. |
