Note: Location of the Benedictine Abbey of Cerne, founded in 987; some 15th-century ruins remain. Overlooking the village is a giant figure cut into the chalk slopes of Giant Hill; recent scholarship suggests it is a figure of Hercules from the 1st century CE although others claim it is the Celtic god Nodens or a Druid figure. A spring called 'St. Augustine's Well' is where the saint is supposed to have commanded the water to come forth.
