Note: Market town that was a center for the footwear and leatherworking industries. There are the remains of a Roman industrial center here as well as a Georgian manor house. Kettering can trace its name origins back to an early Romano-British settlement to the north of the present town and an Anglo-Saxon settlement possibly to the east of the medieval village. The first historical reference to Kettering appears in a charter of 956 CE.
