Note: Located in the Cheddar Gorge, in Cheddar parish adjacent to Cheddar village near Wells. The cave system contains several large chambers and rock formations as well as the Cheddar Yeo underground river system. It was the site of human habitation as early as 40,000 years ago; here in 1903 was discovered a complete human male skeleton, Cheddar Man, who was buried in Gough's Cave 9,000 years ago. DNA tests have established that Cheddar Man’s descendants are still living in Cheddar.
