Note: King Canute (Cnut) supposedly forded the Lily here in the 11th century, hence the name; by 18th century it was the fourth largest town in the county, the "Metropolis of the Eastern Hundreds;" Elizabeth Gaskell (1810-1865) immortalized town in her novel "Cranford".
