Note: Brunswick Town was a colonial settlement founded ca. 1725 and was a major port on the North Carolina coast. In 1748, Spanish ships attacked the town, yet the town and its citizens recovered. In 1776, British soldiers burnt down Brunswick Town, pushing remaining residents to flee. Fort Anderson was later built on the site during the Civil War by the Confederate Army in 1862.
