Note: Province in northwestern Îrān, close to the Caspian Sea. The region is associated with the Safavid dynasty (from the 13th century BCE), and numerous structures, bridges and houses date from that period. Important sites in the province are the Ardabil Bazaar (10th century CE), and several mausoleums: Sheikh Haydar (14th-15th century CE), Sheikh Jabreil (16th century CE), and Sheikh Safi (15th century CE). The majority of the population speaks Azari, a Turkish language. |
