Dvaravati (former nation/state/empire) |
Note: Ancient kingdom of Southeast Asia. It was the first Mon kingdom, located in what is now western Thailand, in the lower Chao Phraya River valley, extending westward to the Tenasserim Yoma and southward to the Isthmus of Kra. It flourished from the 6th to the 13th century, when it was absorbed into the Thai dynasty. The Dvaravati kingdom is noteworthy for its role as a propagator of Indian culture. Dvaravati Mon are also noteworthy for the influence they had on their conquerors, the Khmer, the Burmese, and the Thai. All three were influenced by Dvaravati in writing systems, art forms, government, religious terminology, and scholarship. |
