Note: Mont Blanc is a mountain massif including the highest peak in Western Europe, located on the border of France and Italy and reaching into Switzerland. The peak Mont Blanc is in the Haute-Savoie, a department of southeast France. Glaciers, including the Mer de Glace, the second longest glacier in Europe, cover about 40 square miles of the massif. Ice streams stretch from the central ice dome down to below 4,900 feet. The summit was climbed in 1786 by Michel-Gabriel Paccard with Jacques Balmat, his porter. The region has come to constitute the largest Alpine tourist center, with aerial tramways and facilities for winter sports. The local pastoral activity has vanished. |
