Note: This is a federally-recognized reservation stewarded by the Oneida Indian Nation. The reservation currently spans approximately 18,000 acres in Madison and Oneida Counties, New York. Though members of the Oneida Indian Nation occupied more than 6 million acres stretching from the St. Lawrence to the Susquehanna Rivers prior to European settlement, they did not gain federal reservation lands until 1794. At this time, George Washington signed the Treaty of Canandaigua recognizing the Oneida Indian Nation as a sovereign tribal entity and allocating 300,000 acres for the Nation's reservation. However, by the early 1900s, settler encroachment and illegal state treaties led to the dispossession of much of the Nation's reservation lands. Thanks to tireless efforts by the Nation's tribal members, it has regained more than 18,000 acres of this original reservation, which currently comprise its land base. |
