Note: Lake Peipus lies on the eastern border of Estonia and the province of Pskov in Russia. It measures some 1,370 square miles in area and averages 50 feet in depth. It is frozen over for six months of the year. A battle, termed the "Battle on the Ice," took place on the frozen lake in 1242, in which the Russians under Alexander Nevsky defeated the Teutonic Knights who were invading northwestern Russia. |
