Note: The city of Aalen is situated on the Kocher River some 30 miles north of Ulm in southwestern Germany. It was founded as a large Roman fort, much of which still stands. It became a free imperial city in the 14th century. Badly damaged by fire in 1634, it was rebuilt, and among its historical structures are the town hall of 1636 and the church of Sankt Nikolaus in 1765. The adjacent town of Wasseralfingen was annexed to Aalen in 1975. Today if functions as a communications center and produces chemicals, textiles, and iron goods. |
