Note: Kingdom with capital at Songdo (present-day Kaesŏng in North Korea). Under its founder, Sŏngjong, a centralized political state replaced the former aristocratic tribal system. Invaded by the Mongols in the 13th century, the kingdom was overthrown by the Chosŏn in 1392.
