Note: Probably one of the oldest towns in Holland, it was granted a charter in 1231. It has a turbulent history of fire, the flood of St, Elizabeth, and fighting with Spanish troops during the Eighty Years War. The fortress was taken by Maurice of Orange after the siege of 1593.
