Note: This is a federally-recognized reservation stewarded by the Yurok Tribe. The reservation runs 44 miles along the Klamath River across Humboldt and Del Norte counties. The center of government is Klamath and the river is considered the "life blood of the people." The Yurok and their ancestors have lived in the northwest of what is now California for centuries, however, federal establishment of the Yurok Reservation did not occur until 1855. From the 1990s, the Yurok have made the reclamation of tribal land a priority.
