Note: This is a historical reservation and Native American heritage site that served as the initial federally-recognized landbase for the Northfork Mono Indians, the descendants of the North Fork Rancheria of Mono Indians of California. The historical reservation was located near the present-day city of Madera in Madera County, California, the ancestral homelands of the Northfork Mono peoples. It was initially established by a Treaty dated April 29, 1851 but was not created until 1853. Upon its creation, the historical reservation operated as a series of small "Indian farms," the most significant of which was the Fresno River Farm. However, due to increasing settler encroachment on reservation lands, harsh farming conditions, and administrative corruption, the reservation was terminated in 1860. The descendants of the Northfork Mono peoples would not be granted a new reservation, the North Fork Rancheria, until 1916. |
