Note: This is a federally-recognized reservation stewarded by the North Fork Rancheria of Mono Indians of California, a federally-recognized tribal entity comprised primarily of Northfork Mono peoples. The reservation spans 80 acres located at the western edge of the Sierra National Forest in Madera County, California. The entirety of the reservation's landbase is held in federal trust for the tribe. Though the ancestors of the North Fork Rancheria traditionally occupied lands throughout Madera County prior to European contact, they did not receive a federally-recognized reservation until 1853. At this time, Congress established the Fresno Indian Reservation (or Fresno River Farm) on which the Mono Indians initially settled. However, when the Fresno River Farm was terminated in 1860, the Mono Indians choose to remain on their ancestral lands. In 1916, the North Fork Rancheria was first established. While the Rancheria was likewise terminated in 1958, pursuant to the Rancheria Act, it was reestablished in 1983 as part of the Tillie Hardwick case settlement. |
