Note: Comprises old walled quarter and a modern area, constructed by France; town has long been an important caravan center between West Africa and the Mediterranean Sea; Berber and Arab nomads visit to rest and trade; name means "place of happiness." Located between the el-Hodna Depression, a salt lake, and the Saharan Atlas Mountains, Bou Saâda has been an important stop on the trade route between West Africa and the Mediterranean.
