Note: The town of Ribe is the county seat of the county commune of Ribe in southwestern Jutland, Denmark, situated on Ribe River, some four miles from North Sea. It is one of the oldest towns in Denmark, first recorded in 862. In 948 it became an episcopal see and prospered as a seaport and a favored royal resort through the 12th-century. A royal castle, Riberhus, was built here in the early 12th century but was destroyed by Swedes in 1658. Its historic architecture features the Romanesque Ribe Cathedral, built between 1122 and 1170, and the church and monastery of St. Catharine's, founded 1228. Economic activities include food processing, textile manufacture, and iron founding. The 2004 estimated population was 8,100. |
