Note: The town of Åbenrå is the county seat of the county commune of Sønderjylland in southeastern Jutland, Denmark, situated at the head of Åbenrå Fjord. It was first documented when it was attacked by the Wends in the 12th century. It was granted a charter in 1335 and developed as a flourishing port in the 17th and 18th centuries. It was annexed by Germany in 1864, and remained German until 1920, when it rejoined Denmark by a plebiscite. It has two examples of medieval architecture: the St. Nicolas Church, built in the 1200s and restored in mid-20th century, and Brøndlund Slot, a castle begun in 1411 and restored in 1807. The modern town is an import center and marketing town, and local industries include pipe organ building, food processing, machinery manufacture, and fishing. The 2004 population estimate was 16,100.
