Note: Natural formation comprising frothy-looking, carbonate-mineral white cliffs, formed by lime-charged streamlets (the name Pamukkale means Cotton Castle). Site of thermal springs, which have drawn visitors since ancient times; caves here were considered sacred, called the "Gates of Hell" because they were said to kill people and animals at certain times. Modern research indicates the legend of killing caves is true, caused by the natural release of carbon dioxide.
