Note: Located on west bank of the Nile river near Thebes; noted for ruined temple and tombs; most famous is terraced temple of Queen Hatshepsut from ca. 1500 BCE; it is partially carved out of a cliff and has murals depicting an expedition to Punt (probably Somalia). The "monastery" term is from the Arabic, and refers to a 7th century monastery built on the site from the 7th century CE. |
