Note: Site of well-preserved mummies on the edge of a former lake. The ruins of the town of Loulan are on what were the western banks of Lop Nur, now desiccated. At its peak, the population of the ancient city reached 14,000, and was a popular stop along the ancient Silk Road. Subsequent archeological digs have uncovered traces of rivers and forests that existed in the area, which has since given way to desert. |
