Note: Ancient city located in the foothills of the Turkistan Range in Tajikistan. In its present name, the city dates to the 17th century, but seems to have been in existence as early as the 6th century CE as a stop on the ancient Silk Road. It is home to the Kok-Gumbez Mosque, which was built in the 16th century, and the city is known for its crafts: carving, embroidery, and glazed pottery. |
