Note: The name for this area is documented from the early medieval period. It comprises the easternmost part of the Armenian Plateau, an area currently in southwestern Azerbaijan and eastern Armenia, extending from the highlands of the Lesser Caucasus to the lowlands between the Kura and Aras rivers, including Highland Karabakh (the ancient Caucasian Albanian and Armenian province of Artsakh in present-day Nagorno-Karabakh), Lowland Karabakh (the southern Kura-steppes), and a part of Syunik. |
