Note: Ruesta was one of the pilgrimage sites on route to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, home of the shrine dedicated to Saint James, the patron saint of Spain. Various pilgrimage routes in the autonomous communities of Aragón, Navarre, and León correspond to old Roman roads built in the northern portion of the Iberian Peninsula. Muslims built a fortress in Ruesta in the 9th century and abandoned it the following century. In 1054 the King of Navarre conceded the town to the King of Aragón. The town was abandoned in 1957.
