Note: Jaca was one of the pilgrimage sites on route to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, home of the shrine dedicated to Saint James, the patron saint of Spain. The symbol of Saint James, the scalloped shell, became the primary symbol representing pilgrims. Various pilgrimage routes in the autonomous communities of Aragon, Navarre, and León correspond to old Roman roads built in the northern portion of the Iberian Peninsula. Jaca during the 11th century consisted of two parts, the Burgos of San Nicolás and the Burgos Nuevo. Burgos Nuevo encouraged French people to become settlers. Historic sites in Jaca include the Cathedral of San Pedro, the Church of Santiago and Santo Domingo, the Church of San Gines, the Sarchophagus of Donä Sancha, and the Inn of the Church of the Holy Spirit.
