Note: County Westmeath in the province of Leinster, Ireland, consists rolling plains and limestone hills, measuring some 681 square miles in area. Westmeath was in Celtic times a part of the ancient kingdom of Meath, later the Anglo-Norman earldom of Meath. In 1541, Westmeath became a separate division and came under the ownership of English landlords. The town of Athlone had military importance as a crossing point on the River Shannon. The county seat and main industrial town is Mullingar. The main economic activity is agriculture, particularly fattened cattle, oats, potatoes, and wheat. The 2003 estimated population is 73,600.
