Note: County Dublin is one of Ireland's smallest and most populated counties, at 356 square miles. It probably was formed in the 12th century, but its borders have changed often over time, as when its southern border changed with the formation of Wicklow County in 1606. Much of the land was forfeited to the English enclave in Ireland after the English Civil War of 1641. It was the scene of fighting between British and Republican Irish between 1914 and 1922. Its crops include wheat, barley, and potatoes, and manufacturing includes cotton hosiery, chocolate, and cement products. Its 2003 estimated population was 1,133,600. The county was divided in 1994 into South Dublin, Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown, and Fingal counties, as well as Dublin City, also an administrative division. |
