Note: The capital of Ethiopian kings from ca. 750 BCE, Meroë then became active as the capital and center of the ancient kingdom of Kush after 591 BCE, when Napata, the former Kush capital, was destroyed by the Egyptians. Situated on the east bank of the Nile, the town consisted of several royal palaces and the temple of Amun. The design of the reliefs found at Meroë suggest that the Meroë played a strong role in spreading Egyptian influences and iconographic innovations. Bronze and iron artifacts were also produced there. Meroë flourished until the late 4th century CE. |
