Note: City located in southwestern Azerbaijan, at the foot of the Karabakh mountain range. Xankändi (then known as Khankendy) was founded in 1917, and renamed Stepanakert in 1923, after Stepan Shaumyan, an Azerbaijani Communist leader. When the country gained its independence, the name was officially changed to Xankändi. The city is a manufacturing center that produces processed food, wine, silk, furniture and footwear. |
