Pale, The (historical region) |
Note: The Pale in Ireland was an area comprising the medieval dominions of England in Ireland. Its borders varied with the strength of the English military forces, generally covering portions of the modern counties of Dublin, Louth, Meath, and Kildare. It was first established following the Anglo-Norman invasion in 1171-1172 under Henry II, and lasted until, in the reign of Elizabeth I in the 16th century, the English came to dominate Ireland as a whole. |
