Note: This is a federally-recognized reservation stewarded by the Zuni Tribe. The reservation spans over 450,000 acres across three counties in New Mexico (McKinley, Catron, and Cibola) and one county in Arizona (Apache). The primary village and center of government is Zuni Pueblo. For more than 2,000 years, the Zuni and their ancestors have occupied the Zuni and Little Colorado River valleys, however, federal establishment of the Zuni Reservation did not occur in 1877, after the Zuni had lost about nine million acres of territory die to governmental encourgement of non-Indian settlement of the West. |
