Note: This is a federally-recognized reservation stewarded by the Paiute Indian Tribe of Utah, comprising the Cedar, Indian Peaks, Kanosh, Koosharem, and Shivwits Bands. The reservation consists of ten separate land parcels dispersed amongst each of the Paiute Indian Tribe's five bands; the Cedar Band currently holds 2,000 acres of reservation land, the Indian Peaks Band holds 425 acres, the Kanosh Band holds 2,039 acres, the Koosharem Band holds 1,273 acres, and the Shivwits Band holds 28,153 acres. An additional 45 acres of land are stewarded by The Paiute Indian Tribe as a whole. In total, the reservation spans approximately 33,935 acres in Washington, Iron, Millard, and Sevier Counties, Utah. The Paiute Indian Tribe inhabited present-day southern Utah, southeastern California, northern Arizona, and southern Nevada prior to European contact. Widespread encroachment by the Mormons in the 1850s, culminating in the Mountain Meadows Massacre in 1857, led to the destruction of Paiute tribal sovereignty over its ancestral land base. The tribe was not granted a federally-recognized reservation until 1891, at which time a reservation was established at Shivwits, near present-day St. George, Utah. Other small reservations were established for the tribe's bands between 1915 and 1929. However, these reservations were terminated by Congress in the 1950s. Thanks to tribal advocacy beginning in 1973, the current Paiute Reservation was established for the Tribe and its consistutent bands by Congress on February 17, 1984 pursuant to Public Law 98-219.
