Note: This is a federally-recognized reservation stewarded by the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe. Historically, the reservation has been home to four of the seven distict Lakota bands of the Sioux: Minnicoujou, Itazipco, Siha Sapa, and Oohenumpa. It spans 1,419,504 acres of land in Dewey, Stanley, Meade, Ziebach, Sully, and Haakon Counties, South Dakota; 911,000 acres of this land are tribally owned. Originally 2,700,000 acres, the reservation was established by the 1851 and 1868 For Laramie Treaties. After the Indian Wars of the 1870s, however, the original reservation lands were split into several smaller reservations. In accordance with the Sioux Act of 1889, the current reservation boundaries were solidified. |
