Hierarchy of Old Scatness (archaeological site)  Old Scatness (archaeological site)

Note: An Iron Age village excavated since ca. 1995. Evidence suggest that the main broch tower was built ca. 400 BCE, 400 years earlier than the commonly accepted dates for brochs (massive, defended stone tower houses with staircases running between the inner and outer walls) in this area. The date implies that the broch at Old Scatness was one of the earliest true brochs. Excavations have revealed detailed evidence of the occupants' lifestyle, agriculture, industry, and trade.
