Note: Joara, also known as Xuala, was a major Mississippian-period Native town, near present-day Morganton, North Carolina. The Saura, also known as "Sara" or "Cheraw," lived at Joara until the 1600s, moving to the Upper and Lower Saura Towns along the Dan River. Juan Pardo built the first European settlement in the U.S. interior next to Joara in 1567 to both colonize and trade with the Saura and others in the area.
