Note: Fort San Juan was built by Spanish explorer Juan Pardo in 1567 near the Saura/Cheraw town of Joara (also known as Xuala). It served as a colonial outpost until 1568 when it was destroyed by Native people. It was the first European settlement in the U.S. interior.
