Note: Capital city of Turkmenistan, located in the Akhal oasis, on the edge of the Karakum Desert. It was founded in 1881 by the Russians, taking the name of a local Turkmen settlement. It became the provincial capital in 1924. In 1948, the city was almost completely destroyed by an earthquake, then later rebuilt following the same plan. Ashgabat is an administrative, industrial and cultural center with major industries being glass, cotton, and carpet-weaving. |
