Note: Ancient Canaanite town located just east of modern Nabulus. It was important in ancient Palestine because of its position in an east-west pass between Mount Gerizim and Mount Ebal. It was under Egyptian rule 2nd millenium BCE; capital of Jeroboam I, first king of northern Israel; declined under Assyrians from 722 BCE, but revived in Hellenistic period; destroyed by Maccabean John Hyrcanus I in 129 BCE. Its ruins are under the stratified mound of Tall al-Balatah, which shows evidence of settlement from the Middle Bronze II period (ca. 1900-ca. 1750 BCE), generally associated with the time of the Biblical patriarchs. |
