Note: North-central city in the province of Markazī. This Shi'ite center is home to the burial site of Fatimah al-Ma'suma (died 816 CE) who was the sister of Riza, the leader of Shi'ite Islam. During the 17th century her tomb became a major pilgrimage site and a domed shrine was constructed during the Safavid dynasty (reigned 1501-1732) that sheltered the tomb. The site was adorned by 'Abbas I (reigned 1588-1629), and 'Abbas II (reigned 1642 to 66). Currently, Qom owns one of the largest Islamic schools in Îrān and has experienced dramatic growth because of the discovery of oil around the city. |
